Book collection of the JU Institute of Archaeology
Two libraries of the Institute of Archaeology were created in the period when the Chairs in Prehistoric (Polish) Archaeology and the Chair in Classical (Mediterranean) Archaeology existed separately. Both book collections were created together with the newly established Chairs. In the time that followed they were systematically expanded and now the "prehistoric" library contains 29 755 volumes, whereas the "Mediterranean" collection consists of 14 478 volumes.
Since its very beginning, the library collection has been meant to be the basis for the research conducted by Kraków archaeologists. The Institute staff members and students now have access to specialist encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, periodicals, excavation reports, monographs, and catalogues in both Polish and other languages. The collection includes titles devoted to the archaeology of particular countries and epochs as well as publications from the related disciplines and sciences.
The collection contains a number of journals, including foreign journals, some of which have been gathered since the early 20th century. To cater for the needs of the staff and students, the Library systematically expands its collections and, together with the Jagiellonian Library, is working to digitalize its resources.
Using the library resources
Staff members and students of the JU Institute of Archaeology have full access to the library and the reading room. The students and staff members of other Jagiellonian University units and other higher education institutions can access the library resources in the reading room, having shown the relevant documents. The preparation of the library computer catalogue is underway.
